Frequently Asked Questions

Winter maintenance refers to the proactive measures taken to manage the challenges posed by cold weather conditions.

Gritting is essential for maintaining safe and accessible environments during icy and snowy conditions. It helps prevent accidents, ensures access to properties, and facilitates the continuation of daily life during winter weather.

Gritting involves the application of grit, salt, or de-icing agents to roads, pathways, and surfaces to prevent the formation of ice and snow during winter weather conditions. It provides traction on icy surfaces, improving grip for vehicles and pedestrians. Salt lowers the freezing point of water. When spread on icy surfaces, it melts the existing ice and forms a brine solution that prevents further ice from forming.

The frequency of winter gritting depends on factors such as weather conditions, temperature, and the intensity of snowfall.

The council is only responsible for servicing specific public roads and footpaths. This means that all privately owned roads/sites and carparks will not be gritted by the council. Therefore, you will need to grit the site to make it safe for both employees and visitors.

In the event 2cm of snow or more has fallen on site, our operators will complete Manual Snow Clearance on walkways, smaller pathways, stairs cases and emergency exit routes. Should there be 5cm of snow or more has fallen then our operators will complete Snow Clearance on car parks, roads, loading bays and access routes around your site.

Once gritting has been completed a Service Completion Report will be sent; giving you peace of mind knowing your site will be safe and fully covered should there be any icy weather conditions.

Ice Road Gritters rely on weather forecasts and real-time weather monitoring to determine the optimal timing for gritting operations. We receive our daily 24 hour forecast from our weather provider Met Desk which we use to determine which sites have activated for that night’s service. Sites are activated when the Road Surface Temperature (RST) is forecast to be 0°C and below for that night.

Gritting is an ongoing service that is typically provided throughout the winter season.
